“D’oh!” Moment #1 – I hate changing voicemails

May 20, 2008 at 11:54 am (Miscellaneous)

How many of you absolutely hate to change your voicemail message?  Whether it’s on your cell phone, work phone, or home answering machine, changing the voice message can be a pain!

If you are like me, I’m not a frequent voicemail changer.  I like to record one message that is universally accepted in most solar systems and then leave it alone for months at a time.  Why mess with perfection right?

Other people, however, like to frequently change their voicemails.  Have you ever heard those people at work?  Let me demonstrate for you:

Simple work voicemail: “Hello, you’ve reached the voicemail box of ______.  I’m in the office today but am unavailable to take your call.  Please leave your name, phone number, and a brief message and I’ll return your call as soon as possible.  Thank you.”

Complicated and completely unnecessary work voicemail: “Hello, you’ve reached the voicemail box of ______.  Today is (MM/DD) and I’m in the office today but have meetings throughout the day from 9 AM to 1 PM and starting again at 2:25 PM through 4:45 PM.  If your matter is urgent, please contact ______.  Your visit to this voicemail system is appreciated and……(you get the point, right?)

To make up that voicemail message everyday would drive me insane.  The ONLY time that I change my voicemail message from the simple message format is when I go on vacation or am out of the office.  It’s in that situation that it freaks me out.  What buttons do I push to even change my voicemail?  How do I save the right voicemail?  It can be that last source of pain and anguish before you are free to enjoy time outside the office.

Well, sometime in 2006, I left on vacation and left an out of office message on my voicemail.  I thought it was simple enough.  I guess not…

I returned to quite a few messages from people either laughing hysterically or telling me “Umm, you should check your voicemail message I think…”.  After 5 or 6 of these, I started to get a complex and thought to myself, what could possibly be so wrong with my message?.  Curiousity got the best of me and to my horror, below was my voicemail message for 1 1/2 weeks at a Fortune 100 company:

“Hi, you’ve reached the voicemail box of Matt Legere.  Today is….awww crap…I hate leaving voicemails.  This is so stupid.”

This was definitely up there as a “D’oh!” moment for me and thought that it should deserve the honor of being the first entry in this series.

Morale of the story?  Double check that voicemail message, okay?

Introduction of D’oh! Moments

May 20, 2008 at 11:43 am (Miscellaneous)

This is the first, probably in a series, of what I will be calling “D’oh! Moments”.  While I don’t really agree with much of the content on the series, the writers of the Simpsons have given us a word to use on bad days.  In the script of the Simpsons, this word is referenced as “annoyed grunt”.

It’s even been added to the Oxford English dictionary as ridiculous as that sounds with the caption of “expressing frustration at the realization that things have turned out badly or not as planned, or that one has said or done something foolish”.

As weird as us humans are, by hearing about other people’s “D’oh” moments, it gives us something to laugh about and makes us realize that none of us are perfect and will all mess up at some point.

Enjoy these “D’oh!” moments and please feel free to share other hilarious stories as you find them.

Servant of a wicked cool God,

Welcome to Matt Legere’s Blog…

May 19, 2008 at 7:30 pm (Personal)

Hello world!  My name is Matt Legere and I’d like to let this post serve as official notice that my blog is alive!  It’s alliiiivvveee!

The purpose of this blog is to share with you readers the heart of someone who has a consuming passion to see the Kingdom of God manifested in New England and New York.  Pretty simple enough, right?

In the past, I’ve started blogs and written articles and have never stuck with it.  (For all of you who read that previous stuff – thanks for the patience!)  This time, I feel like there are things that God would like for me to share with you.  He’s my boss so here we go!

While I have an initial idea of where this blog will go, I won’t set limitations around it either.

  • We will review and discuss books, movies, sermons, etc. that have absolutely changed my life and will rock yours too!
  • We’ll talk about spiritual concepts along with relevant life experiences/applications that God has used to help shape me and others for His purpose.  My hope is that these concepts, experiences, applications, etc. will also help shape you into the destiny that God has for you.
  • We will review spiritual concepts and principles that will help set us ablaze for the glory of Christ!
  • We’ll also talk about practical life principles, such as family, finances, time management, careers, etc.

I’m hopeful that this process won’t be a one-way deal where I talk and people read without jumping in.  Rather, it’s my prayer that God will somehow use this blog for His glory and that He’ll network people together for His purpose and His plan.

I’m far from perfect and have many more lessons in my walk with Jesus Christ, but if we dare to demonstrate the power of the Spirit of the Resurrected Christ living inside of us, we can truly turn our world upside-down again!
